What does God think of the close relationships we have with pet animals?

I love my cat to bits and would do anything for him. However, I couldn't tell you the names of either of my next-door neighbours, and if I'm honest, the sight of puss choking on his fur evokes far more emotion in me than television pictures of death and suffering in Iraq/Afghanistan/Iran/Zimbabwe/wherever. Is this sinful?
